Most people will have heard about Aesop’s fable about the tortoise and the hare. It’s one of the most timeless and loved stories of all time. But, what if I told you that there was more to that story and that it reveals something unexpected? What impactful entrepreneurs do every day that has led to their success?
The classic story goes like this. There was a speedy hare who always bragged about how fast he could run. One day, the turtle, fed up with the hare’s boasting, challenged him to a race. Hare took off at his usual speed and ran down the road as fast as he could. Looking back he saw that the turtle was nowhere close, so he decided to take a rest and a nap under that tree. When he woke, he realized that the turtle had passed him, and went through the finish line. Moral of the story? Don’t brag about your speed or success, for slow and steady won the race.
But wait, there is more to it than that. After turtle beat the hare in the first race, hare challenged turtle to another race. This time hare didn’t take an overly confident nap in the middle of the race. Instead, he stayed at a consistent speed, down the road and beat turtle by a long shot. Moral of the story? While slow and steady wins the race, so does consistency and action, instead of resting on your laurels.
But, the story continues. Turtle knew that he could never beat hare on this particular road. So, he challenged hare to another race. But, this time in a different setting. Hare proudly accepted the challenge, and took off at a consistent speed, ahead of turtle by again, a few miles, until they reached a river. Hare didn’t know how to swim. So, he had no choice but to stay put. Turtle, on the other hand, waded to the river and swam across with ease. Moral of the story? Identify your strengths and use them to your advantage to create opportunities.
The story doesn’t end there, however. Looking back at his opponent across the river, turtle decided that winning the race wasn’t as important as what he was about to do next. He swam across the river to pick up hare on his back and together they finished the race. Moral of this story? As much as you can win the race as an individual, you’ll never truly reach your full potential until it’s no longer just about ego. There will always be areas where you’ll need the help of someone who does well, and areas where you shine where others don’t.
This is the difference between entrepreneurs and successful entrepreneurs. We climb the ladder so that we can reach a hand down and help others to do the same. Think of the most successful entrepreneurs and companies. What do they contribute to the world? What problems do they solve? How are they able to find solutions for customers?
To have a thriving business today, it’s not enough to just do it for ourselves. It’s time to help others to do the same, and realize their own potential and dreams to create a lifestyle, where they’re also thriving, fulfilled and making an impact.
