I’ve talked a lot about vulnerability in the past few months… how it can set you free and open you up to a whole new audience… but there’s also a scary side to the vulnerability coin.

Hey everybody! This is Marley Jaxx and welcome to the world of video, impact, and profit – or as I like to call it, the VIP Code.

Before we jump into today’s episode, if you’re listening to this as an entrepreneur, agency owner, or influencer… you’ll be glad to know that my Infinite Video Impact challenge is starting again soon! If this is your first time hearing about it, this 21-day challenge gives you all the tools you need to start generating impact and profit through video for your business. It’s housed in an exclusive Facebook group where I’ll be checking in with you everyday to coach you through the curriculum, answer your burning questions, and more! At the beginning of 2020, I announced to my entire audience that my marriage has ended and my name – as well as the name of my business – would be changing. Then, I talked about it again on stage in front of over 5000 people at an event called Funnel Hacking Live.

I re-recorded that announcement video at least 5 times over. Every time I had to tell someone new about my divorce in those first few weeks, I got a tinge of fear.

What will they say?

What will they think?

How will this affect my reputation or their idea of who I’m supposed to be?

Will they get past this?

Will I get past this?

All these questions were rolling around in my head until the very moment I revealed this truth out loud… and then, the strangest thing would happen. In the case of this announcement video, I was met with literally hundreds of comments and DMs saying “I’ve been there too” or “Thank you for telling your story” or “I feel like I know you so much better now” or “Let me know if you need anything”.

I was so awestruck by this response. The lead-up was so scary and overwhelming, but the fall-out was so rewarding. I didn’t know what to expect, but I didn’t expect the level of empathy, understanding, and compassion that was and is still being sent my way.

I truly believe that vulnerability does set you free. It sets you apart from your competitors and the imposterpreneurs on social media… It allows you to relate to people on a deeper level, rather than just constantly talking about what you’re selling and why people should want it.

But what I’m learning now is that vulnerability doesn’t garner the same response in every situation.

Your vulnerability is kind of like a house pet that you carry around with you everywhere; some people are going to love it and ask you to bring it around more often… and others are going to think it’s too loud or it sheds too much. They might even be allergic to it.

Escaping that metaphor for a second, what I’m trying to say is… vulnerability can sometimes mean rejection. Sometimes, when you show your vulnerable side to other people, they need time to process it and meet you at your level. And the fact is, sometimes, your vulnerability might be too much for them altogether.

But I happen to think that carrying that vulnerability around with you is worth the trip, because you’ll quickly be able to separate the pet-lovers from the allergy-sufferers. Rejection is a part of life, so you might as well lay your cards on the table. Okay… I’m officially mixing metaphors now… but I think you understand what I’m getting at here.

I’ve found vulnerability to be extremely scary, risky, and rewarding all at the same time. Even though my vulnerability has been met with different reactions, I don’t regret taking it for a walk.

That’s the end of today’s episode, but don’t forget – if you want to jump start your content strategy and start driving impact and profit through video for your business, sign up for my Infinite Video Impact challenge at InfiniteImpactChallenge.com! The next challenge is starting up again soon!
